Mission Statement

The members of Veteran Student Alliance (VSA) are committed to the club, our Veterans, and the public. We are here to outreach and identify the needs and future goals of in-coming Veterans; providing every individual who seeks guidance, the resources and knowledge to accomplish any task.

VSA will show members a new sense of family and cohesion. New members will be welcomed into our band of brothers and sisters. As a group, we will give those who have joined a feeling of energy, support, knowledge, and excitement to face tomorrow’s challenges.

As VSA grows in members and years, we promise to continue sharing ideas and always decide what is best for the club, no matter an individual’s position or affiliation to the organization. We will help all Veterans and members understand the challenges and changes of lifestyle that will be faced during transition, but as a unit, these challenges can be faced and conquered.

VSA must lead by example and present ourselves in an approachable manner; defending all ideas and taking on new members and challenges with a firm embrace.

We are not serpents presenting apples; nor will we make promises we can’t keep.  There are no dictators; instead, we are a light for the lost and/or found. We will be a friend to our fellow Veterans and will present direction to form solutions for hard times.

Our doors are open and shall never close. This is Sierra College’s Veteran Student Alliance.

Forum tackles transition from 'combat to college'

Veterans are a growing part of the Sierra College landscape.

"The Road Home ... From Combat to College and Beyond," a day-long forum Friday created by and for the growing number of veterans - more than 200, with that number expected to grow 20 percent in the next year - of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan who are now pursuing education at Sierra College.
"Coming home is not getting off an airplane," said Todd Stenhouse, spokesperson for the National Veterans Foundation. "It is a lifelong process. It's hard to comprehend going from a battlefield to a classroom, and in short order. There needs to be seamless support when they come home."

Friday's forum, organized by the Sierra College Veterans Club and to be held in the Dietrich Theatre on the Rocklin campus, features guest speakers and panels comprised of Sierra College veterans, staff and students. The purpose is to highlight experiences and challenges war veterans face upon returning home, and increasingly, to college campuses.

"When you're in the military you eat together, work together, sleep together," said Catherine Morris, veterans counselor and Sierra College Veterans Club adviser. "When you come back, that lifestyle is gone."

Featured speakers include Floyd "Shad" Meshad, president of the National Veterans Foundation, and Patrick Campbell, legislative director for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

Topics of discussion include the experiences and challenges facing combat veterans, traumatic brain injury and developing an ideal campus and community.
