Personal Development 1, College Success, 3 units (Learning Community Course - Linked Course to English A)

Class meets Tuesdays 6:30 – 9:35 p.m.  August 31- December 19, 2009

College Success, PD1 is designed with veterans and dependents in mind.   The goal is to assist veterans in the transition from military to college life and beyond.   The subject of our class is SUCCESS...what success is for you personally and how you can achieve it. In this class, you will learn many proven strategies for creating greater academic, professional, and personal success.  We’ll have many opportunities to address unique issues veterans and their families face, especially OIF/OEF.

English A, Mechanics & Basic Composition, 3 units (Learning Community Course – Linked to Personal Development 1)

Instructor:  Michelle Johnson, Mentor, Veteran Student Alliance

 

Class meets Thursdays 6:30 – 9:35 p.m. August 31 – December 19, 2009

This specific English course offers students the opportunity to develop their writing and critical thinking skills with an emphasis on veteran issues.

History 22, Military History, 3 units

Instructor: Paul Cooper, Mentor, Veteran Student Alliance

 

Class meets Thursdays 6:30 – 9:35 p.m.

Study of American Military History, from 1774 to present, covering the American War of Independence, War of 1812, the Barbary Wars, Mexican American War, Civil War, Native American Wars, Spanish American War, Boxer Rebellion, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War of 1991, Afghanistan 2002, and Iraqi Freedom 2003. Includes the reading of historical works, literature, and historical documents. Examines the Powell Doctrine, the Principles of War, and the reasons and causes of war.

VA Work-Study Program:

 

 

If you're a full-time or 3/4-time student in a college degree program, or a vocational or professional program, you can "earn while you learn" with a VA work-study allowance.

 

What type of work can a Work-study student perform?

Students must be assigned tasks that will permit them to perform 100% VA related activities. Work-study sites include, but are not limited to, Department of Veterans Affairs offices, National Cemeteries, VA Medical Centers, Veteran Clinics, educational institutions, Department of Labor offices and some military installations.

STUDENT WORK-STUDY PROGRAM                                                                                                               At the Nevada County Veterans Service Office

(1)        ARE YOU ELIGIBLE?                                                                                          You are, if you are a student enrolled at a rate of ¾ time and  Chapter 30, 31, 33, 35, 1606 or 1607 U.S. Code.

(2)        HOW MUCH CAN YOU EARN?                                                                         You can earn the California State hourly minimum wage TAX FREE!                                                              You are allowed to work up to 25 hours per week.

(3)        WHAT TYPE OF WORK WILL YOU DO?                                             Processing Department of Veterans Affairs paperwork, outreach services, etc.
